What is a TMJ disorder and what are the symptoms?

Any upset in the normal function of the temporomandibular joint is considered a TMJ disorder. Injuries, and trauma to the face, head, and neck, often cause a “slipped” disk (disk displacement), of the TMJ and expression of symptoms such as:

  • Headaches (mild and occasional to severe and chronic)

  • A dull, aching pain around the ear, “earaches”, often radiating into the face and sometimes into the neck, back of the head, and shoulders

  • Tenderness or soreness of the jaw muscles

  • Clicking or popping noises when opening or closing the mouth

  • Difficulty opening the mouth or chewing

  • Ringing in the ears

  • Hearing loss or stuffiness of ears “plugged” ears
  • Dizziness or loss of balance

  • Pain when chewing, yawning, or opening the mouth wide

  • Visual Disturbances (pain behind the eyes)

  • Muscle tension in the head, neck, and/or shoulders

TMJ disorders are often misdiagnosed because of the variety of these symptoms are common to several diseases.
