What Are Trauma-Related TMJ Disorders?
The most probable cause for a “slipped” disk, (also called internal derangement, subluxated meniscus, dislocated or displaced disk) of the TMJ is macrotrauma to the joint by impact or hyperextension / hyperflexion injuries. These injuries may occur as a result of joint contusion, fractures, whiplash trauma or iatrogenic trauma. After these injuries take place, symptoms including pain, clicking / popping noises, jaw dysfunction, etc., may be immediate or delayed.
